Recipe Notes
Scotch eggs are an English dish and authentic recipes use a hard boiled egg and sausage meat. This version is inspired by a Japanese dish called Menchikatsu, a breaded and deep-fried ground meat.
Thoroughly mixing the meat and removing the air inside will help prevent the meat from cracking while deep-frying.
The meat is well seasoned in this recipe so you should be able to enjoy it with only mustard.

I am very grateful you shared this recipe and I used it as a guide for my own variation of the scotch egg. I wanted a smaller, hors d’œvre version so I used quail eggs. To the ground pork I added some bean curd paste, ground ginger and cumin as well as what you listed. They turned out great!
Happy to hear that you found inspiration in our recipe and made it your own with quail eggs! 😍 The addition of bean curd paste, ginger, and cumin must have brought out some incredible flavors! 😃 So glad it turned out great for you! Thank you! ❤️
This recipe looks amazing. I’ve never seen anything like this before. I particularly like the part about using flour to bind the egg to the meat.
If I made something like this I would totally change it but that’s a matter of personal taste. Such as using ground turkey instead of beef or pork (which has the advantage of being less greasy), replacing the cabbage with jalepeno, and replacing the Panko with plain bread crumbs and eliminating the ketchup because I don’t like sugar in my meat. 😀
Seriously though, I like this recipe and the step by step process and photos. The end result does look very tasty.
I would like to taste your version of scotch eggs. 🙂 Especially the one with jalapeno instead of cabbage sounds tempting! Thank you for the comment.
